What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Because acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine utilize energy to generate change they can play a part int the treatment of almost any condition. The goal is to treat the person and the pattern rather than the symptom. I have seen acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas relieve pain, lift mood, calm, energize and generate a sense of well being even in patients who are very seriously ill. What does an acupuncture treatment look like and is it safe?

During the first appointment we review your health history and discuss your main concerns. Diagnostic reports from Western medical tests may be useful  but they are not necessary for treatment. I ask you a series of questions to evaluate the systems of your body. This usually takes 45 minutes. I check your pulse qualities and look at your tongue, both standard parts of Oriental Medical diagnosis. The intake is followed by a 15-30 minute treatment with needles. After the first treatment the intake portion of the appointment is shorter, about 15 minutes and the needle portion is 20-30 minutes long.

Acupuncture needles are very thin, sterile and disposable, about the thickness of two hairs and are hardly noticeable on insertion. Just as

one dose of an antibiotic is not a sufficient treatment for an infection, a course of acupuncture treatments (usually 6-12) is recommended so that your symptoms can be alleviated long term.
